Our successful Ready to Read book drive is coming to a close, and we want to thank all of our customers that contributed books, which will be packed up and shipped off to the Madan Estate in Papua New Guinea. We are aiming to collect boxes from our customers prior to Thanksgiving. So, if you still have a stack of easy reader books, including encyclopedia sets, then feel free to drop them off at Portland Roasting offices at 340 SE 7th Avenue.
The books will fill the shelves of the burgeoning community center that Aarlie Hull, Madan Estate owner is creating in an effort to increase literacy rates among the community. In an area that places little emphasis on early childhood education, easy reader books or books of any kind are a welcome gift — opening up new avenues of learning for children and their parents. To read more about the progam, find us on our Facebook events page or on our website.
The book drive was a fortunate opportunity for us to connect our local customers with our far-flung Farm Friendly programs, which seek to improve the quality of life for our coffee farmers and their communities. We will continue to look for opportunities to link our local efforts with our global ones.
